A Victorian floral repoussé 14K yellow gold locket. Circa 1890.
Repoussé is French for ‘pushed out’. It is a metalwork technique in which a piece of metal is worked up from the back in order to create a design in relief. In the nineteenth century, stamping became mechanized and was used to mass-produce pieces that feature repoussé.
